Sock puppets bashing
Each other on the head
With mallets
Endless back and forth
A teeter totter of violence
The enraptured audience stared and clapped aimlessly
Everyone was afraid to look behind them and see the frozen faces

Ethereal beings hold hands
As the earth floods with starlight
We ascend slowly every day
Into the unknown
Then we run over a deer
And time stops
We stop dreaming and are confronted with mortality
We give it a funeral and
Get back to daydreaming

He had nothing to say
So he took some charcoal from the fire
And began drawing on the wall
He drew a buffalo
It galloped across the fertile plains
When the buffalo got tired it napped in the shade of a mesa
A mean cowboy chased it with a serrated blade
So before the buffalo got caught; the artist washed the sketch away, smudging it into safety

For every light there is a shadow
I saw an owl perched on a gargoyle
He told me to settle down
And that all things would pass
But they didn’t pass fast enough
My personality would be divided even though that’s not a thing
Legions of voices bothering me
Just blast them away through ballads in your earbuds

Lizard brain on display
The nervous Id
Even though I don’t really know what that is
All mammals out to get you
Last of your kind
Just want to find sun baked rock
To perch on for warmth or climb under for shade

World on a string
Doesn’t mean a thing
It’s all in your head
Yeah right they say
No control
I’m a willing servant
Above everything
Yet bound like a marionette to popsicle sticks

Trudging through landslides
I found someone’s discarded half burnt cigarette
It was a menthol
I lit it and smoked it and it still tasted fresh
Meanwhile all the garbage on the barge stunk to high heaven and the monogamous seagulls made me smile

Hair turning silver bodies melt and decay
Why fight it
It makes you humble
Eat some blood pudding
Break your dietary vows
Draw everything in cube form until you can’t see curved lines anymore
Imagine skulls until all you can think about is our skeletons underneath
Add it together and you get a formula for warp speed travel that of course you won’t live long enough to see in flight

Squirrels are funny things
I like the thieves eating out of the birdfeeder
Watching them get fat before winter
All the squirrels compete with each other
If only squirrels could run humans through an awesome maze with a stupid pile of bitcoins at the end

All these phantasms lurk behind rotting walls
Images of rusted medical history instruments pricking the skin
I bored a hole in my skull to release the pressure
A fountain of plasma oozes forth and all is clear for a split second like an imbibed whipped cream canister on a crooked path to your ganglia
Daises sprout up all around the dwelling as the house magically becomes pristine and beautiful again
The cottage’s history didn’t matter it was a gorgeous place on a pleasant hill forever onward

Eyes everywhere
Their stare was annoying
A many monocled beast of yore
Voices carry through
The airwaves
Our senses become an abomination
What is real and what is false get muddled
What we believe in shines through

Traveling through worm holes across
Time and space
There is so much to experience
But thinking at home can be just as thrilling
Surrounded by devices
You can multitask and
Divide your attention afraid to miss a single thing
So much stuff to entertain it’s almost an entire multiverse that traps you in its web at your fingertips

We can’t help but affect others
If only we lived in a vacuum
So we have to discipline ourselves to shut out the noise
Everyone meditates in their own way
To have purpose
Despite distractions
The hum drum buzzes
It’s easy to get jaded by
Plastic and neon

Untamed fields
Filled with the hum of locusts
We had our jar at the ready
Every hop barely out of reach
Finally cradled in my hands
He spit tobacco all over me
I thought to myself that grasshoppers have a disgusting habit

A silly deep conversation
Connecting even if it’s
Imagined
No one prepares us for life’s traumas
They are hard to even talk about
But we still have to empathize and listen with an open heart

I just want to eat cream cheese and butter
And grow old as fast
As possible
Forget about the past
And embrace the future
Get frozen inside a cryogenic chamber and wake up in eons
Only to disappear again
Then in a leap year,
We can smash the exquisite corpse landscape like Godzilla
Then hold the wreckage up to a hall of mirrors
Wondering why we took the atom out of its mint
Packaging

A Hollywood narrative
We all believe in
And that’s fine
Sometimes bliss is best
But not required
However you can’t survive off
Affection
You still need bread
And water
Sometimes the day old bread hurts your teeth
And you wonder why you bargain shop at all
Because eating bread
Is life itself

Have you ever bought a gift for someone that was really for yourself?
I did and it was so transparent it made them really sad
But that was just one birthday
It’s every other day that matters too
Still I wonder if every gift to some degree is more about making the gift giver feel good
That they put in their due diligence is validating
To be clear though my gift was actually for me!
And eventually they did give it to me cause they didn’t want it
On the upside, I really enjoyed that video game :)

Playing bughouse in front of the warm glow
Of the television
A b movie as background
We couldn’t be more happy
Now
Ascending escalators to purgatory
Why can’t we be each other’s crutch?
Just let me do the dishes in return
That is if I can be torn away from this game of dominoes

Send me a postcard from
All the places I want to go
But never will
Buy me a snow globe with
Some crumbling modern wonder inside
From the gift shop
I want to experience the
World through trinkets and baubles
While devouring good ‘n plenty’s
Like medication
Until I get cavities from wishing too much

Life is just an endless argument
Everyone wants to be right
Even on gravestones people put their epitaph as if they got the last word and no one can talk back to them now
Some random guy wrote on his tombstone “just shut up.”
Now I have to wait forever and a day plus one to say
“I know you are but what am I?!”

The deafening silence
Suddenly felt so much less suffocating
Waiting in anticipation felt
Fun
Like Xmas morning
I wrapped your gift inside another gift inside another
Like Russian dolls
Then we went to Minsk cause that’s where Rochelle and Worf are from
Regurgitating things
Then going out dancing in
Bipolar reversible coats
The stitching of our necks
Was a half ass job
I pulled on your thread
And your cranium fell off
No worries I have a green
Stapler

I wish I could write well in another language.  I feel so dumb and ignorant.  I want to learn about things outside America.  This is a sick society or maybe I’m just complaining.  My mind goes back and forth about whether I’m just living in the provinces of a decadent declining empire.

Wrapped up in sleeping bags on the couch
Up all night
Stuffed from consuming
Peanut buster parfaits
I needed to talk to go to sleep
So you told me the story of the power nine mtg cards
I vowed to myself
One day I’d be richer than Scrooge mcduck
So I could buy all the
Supposedly demonic junk
I wanted

Staring up at the clouds
I saw one that resembled a
Dodo
I decided to count this as an official birding sighting
And made a note of it
There also was that one time I saw an ivory billed woodpecker eating out of our dumpster
Oh yeah and I witnessed a condor using rudimentary tools to vandalize a public statue
Birds embiggen the soul

Let us be carefree
Let all our worries
Melt away
We are all prisoners in some way or another
But our minds are free
Let’s ride a slow train to the end of the line
Let’s carve pumpkins in July
Let’s eat really bad cold pizza and buy souvenirs
From the museums of other people’s lives
Machinery has a spirit
Can you hear the novelty claw machine descending to pick out a prize?
It is probably just a gift card to Home Depot in its claws
But maybe it’s an even more valuable card to the last remaining Sears!

Calling collect from a pay phone
Asking for a ride home
You were late as always
Portable CD player running low on rechargeable batteries
The minivan pulled up
You said you were really stressed
I said that’s what you always say
I knew you’d spend the rest of the day in your room watching rom coms
If I were miss congeniality I would wish for world peace
Nothing corny about that

The horror of the beach
People getting skin cancer
Sharks taking bites out of fearless surfers
The boardwalk filled with unwinable carnival games
The beach itself
Disappearing ‘neath the
Rising waters
Bulldozers were called in to replace the shore
They uncovered a pirate treasure
Unfortunately the gold was cursed
All the raiders were doomed to vacation at this same spot every year until they eventually got talked into buying timeshares

We walked til our legs
Fell off
What was the point
Trying to prove something
Is dumb
Pointless sacrifice
So us claustrophiles hid in whatever box we could
Retreating from the endless march
Vultures circled
Voices whispered
They foretold the singularity even before we got the ufo in Tetris
To celebrate we went mall walking because somehow it felt like a more appropriate form of walking
