"Men of Their Time"
An Open Letter About Life
Like a modern-day celeb, men of their time captured the public's attention and inspired a generation or two (or maybe three or four). Some were wealthy with riches and displayed their worth prominently. Some were wealthy with knowledge and inspired many to worthy causes. Yet, many proved their worth not just by deeds, but by the legacy of the written word.
When I think of a modern "man of his time", I dig a little deeper than headlines. I go beyond well-publicized IPOs, the business mogul du jour and even the cache of celebrity.
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Richard Branson. Modern men of their time for sure, but their names r...

Letter to my dying neighbor and friend.
Dear Mr. Humphrey,
I imagine this letter finds you in good company, surrounded by your loving family. Just thought I would send you a quick note of some observations as your neighbor and friend.
First let me say that it has always been a pleasure to be the neighbor of you and your lovely wife, Mrs. Humphrey. The kindness that you have shown us has always made our family feel in perfect harmony with “those wonderful people” next door. Thank you for that.
I also want to tell you how much I admire the closeness of your family, observing the frequency of their visits over the years and the love they so openly bring to your doo...
I wanted to tell you that I am really sorry to hear that you lost your rings. I know that those rings were the most special things to in the world. I know that it was almost 11:30p.m. And it was hard to see but science today is a nice day with a lot of sun it will be easier to see today. I was praying a lot last night and today for those rings and hope that someone found them and returned them to you because those rings look best on you then anyone else. I know that those rings were worth more then gold to you. And you have had those for 15 years, which makes them even more valuable.
This idea came to me last night when we were both crying because we could...

The Vision of "LifesLetters" realized in lett.rs - Thank you
To My Family Araceli, Blake, Dane, and Ana,
I grew up writing and receiving beautiful letters through my informative years in school, travel, war, love, and life. From 1982 to 2002 I estimate that I received and wrote more than 800 letters over 20 years. While that may seem like a lot, 40 letters per year is small relative to the estimated average of 12,000 emails per year I estimate I received during the last 20 years. Oddly, I cradle the letters of my life with much greater care and reflection than I do any set of emails, texts, tweets, or likes. And herein lies the problem and the opportunity for change.....
Welcome to lett.rs! I appreciate you offering to join our crusade to "save the letters" from extinction and inspire new letters to be written for the future! I am especially hopeful we can do something interesting with the Canton High School as a means to improve the motivation for better writing through letters.
Upload hand written letters from the past, and please create your own fridge, shoebox, and writing style as you pursue "a life with letters" as part of your written communications.
For the students I can see:
- a letters assembly about slow communications
- a letters research and curation contest
- a new letters contest and / or club
- lett.rs as a platform for ...
Open Letter to the World,
Don't forget the following: time is overrated, the past has left, the future is just a concept. The only thing that is real is now.
So start taking on 'now' like it's nobody's business.
You with me?
Dear Mr. Bartkiewicz,
We received the letter you sent us. Thank you for taking the time to come into Room 106 and teach us all about lettrs. This is such a cool site, and we will start writing letters soon to put on Miss Godbout's fridge. We learned some great things on your site like how to create a shoebox for personal letters, how to post letters to our fridge, how to write a letter and even how to change the font. Also, we can't believe you can upload letters from famous people to this site! Many of us look forward to lettrs coming out on the ipad. We look forward to learning more about lettrs and using it at CIS. Thanks again and best of luck to you with lettrs.
Dear Mr. Allen,
I am very much looking forward to a discussion on the importance of letter writing with your class.
People through time have written letters that gave us rich historical and literary context. In fact, some of the most brilliant words ever pieced together came from letters.
We all have them in our shoeboxes at home. We all are anxious when we receive a letter. We all need to sometimes "take time to write" to impact the life of another person through the medium of the letter. Not every digital communication needs to be fast, and for that reason we created lettrs.
We will search the amazing world of letters past with the aspiration of inspiring new letters to ...

I am trying out the lettrs website! I have always been tied to either art or the written word. What a marvelous platform you have created!
I am working on new paintings and jewelry right now. I hope to try to include some of the photos with my letters here to share with the world.
Thank you so much for including me in this awesome project!

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
I commend your recent actions to promote the technology industry in New York. In an age where political posturing and incompetence threatens the very existence of our nation, your administration looks deep into the future and understands how the rapidly changing economic landscape is intrinsically linked to technology. Your insights and initiatives of today will guarantee a prosperous tomorrow for all New Yorkers.
During recent speeches at NY Tech Meet Up and IBM’s Think Forum, your message was clear; New York City will be the dominant force in technology, ultimately surpassing Silicon Valley, with an emphasis in tech startups. What fascinates me how you arrived...
Dear Real Madrid,
The year was 2004 and I was wee, naive, and had more nostrils than girlfriends. I was in the early stages of puberty (I was a late bloomer) and the fat Ronaldo was still below the 5 McDonalds Happy Meals a day mark. It was a warm spring night at my home in Mumbai. The life of a middle school kid was tough in those days. I had to decide whether I would listen to my teacher and sit with that tough guy who bullied me, or tell my mom he touched me in an inappropriate place and be done with it. It was 3 am, and I was in the living room, tears running down my face. It wasn’t because of the big bully, but it was because it was late March and Real Madrid was 1-0 down to Villarre...
