Teach yourself
How to love
Each part of you—
No matter how small

Before someone comes along
And tells you
What parts are worth loving
Or not loving at all

I thought I bloomed
To some staircase descending
But it really all depended
On how the lens was leaning

Scored four years from birth
I saw the spit turn into oceans
As my shell cracked like a pistachio on
The end table
And all I’m remembering was how red sheets
Remind me of your walking away
So 26 years later, I don’t own any.
I hope you never have to know
That I’m haunted by what I could have said
To make you lose your humanity?
I don’t love you anymore
But I swear I did then.
At least I think I did then.

Later that year,
Weak eyed, I asked my preacher
Why flowers grow thorns?
I recall the recitation of some perfumed scripture
About universal love
And how we belong to welcomed gates abov...

She doesn’t know how sad I’m getting
Hell—I don’t know how sad I’m getting
Lately it’s hard to tell if I’m pretending
I used to be damn good at this

I feel like a used spring
Decades of giving back
—Of reacting
And now I’ve slowed in exhaustion
And I’m fighting it
I swear I am
But I’m afraid

I taste hubris
It’s salt and medication
The tendrils of Ophelia are surrendering to the prisms of me
I am a pillar of some decade old reflection—
A vagrant in my honesty

Some people we meet
Because they are meant to show
Not how far we’ve come
But how far
We have left to go

(Believe the story friends)

Take me dancing
Where my sacrifices
Can meet your own
Where we diagnose
How to downsize pupils
And calm heart beats
Of the strongest beasts

Take me to that room
Where the rest of the universe
Doesn’t exist
Let me feel again
How it felt to be acknowledged
By shadows swallowing shadows

The kiss of someone else’s depression
Is more light than I ever deserved

Take me to that place
Where trust isn’t primitive
Where I remember what it is like
To hold something infinite

I left you there
When I crawled out of the moons craters
I left you there, an orphan
Born with their mothers tongue muttering
that Joy—
Joy is nothing more than that of a first name
Singing in the rain

Your cigarette arms
Are heating my body
—- Like warming fruit

It reminds me of a younger kitchen
When my pulp was less patient
But now your coffee eyes,
lingering on mine—-
Tension leaves my tongue salivating
For your sanctuary

I remember the one before you
Said, “Depression is an edible desire”
And I told myself
“Believe nothing from that liar”
But often, we starve ourselves from the truth
And I know,
Strictly from the state I’m in
That I’m eating for two

Little lungs
Always at rest

You are a gun
That will never know death

Damaged digits
Arching blonde curls
Simple miracle laid to rest
Among tidal pearls

O’ cruel fate
The most accurate pain
Has shaky aim

I am fashioned by midnights and songs
Inspired by half crushed sand castles
Still surviving close to the shoreline
I hang on that way

I am something of a better man
Existing under your full canopy of light
Lately love
It's the only way I know how to survive

Don't bother with the bodies in the dark
They're only there to remind me
Of the short distance between
The old me and where you are

Depression is a capricious lover

I used to admire trees
Without giving blessings to their roots
Now I pull people from the soil
Because I can’t help but seek the truth
(Love one another please)

I’ve been listening closely
To the sound of rain
Letting my self awareness lose itself beyond the pane

Mother used to call me
Optimist, stained
And I always liked how it sounded
Coming from her mouth

Like my heart was a waxed flower
Born hopeful, but without potential to grow

So I sit writing about the bones I’ll never own

Clink. Clink. My left eye continues to twitch
Suddenly I’ve become a cloud
Floating
Noticing animals below
As I crash into the sun and smatter my yolk

I’m helium,
Pulling roots from countries I never got to visit
And if there has to be a way to end
This is it

I’m coming to God with flowers
Un-waxed and full of mercy
He made such beautiful creatures
—still, creature...

Crashing into you
Vigorously,
Allowing the love we make
To take shape

I found depression in my mothers knuckles
And behind my fathers smile

Sometimes it hits you for no reason

And sometimes despite the sun
You can't find the light

But that’s alright.

These eyes have seen too many ghosts to speak of grace
Or the value of silence

I chariot up my will
And chain it to western beliefs
I can no longer tell
If my body is a hunger or a feast!

This feeble armistice is coming down
Violently, and all at once
A kite string laced through a Gull wing
I’m all glances and chances
Repositioning the rust throughout the machine
Begging, literally begging
For depression to give me identity

It’s castrating, metaphorically
To be hinged to such a thing
But too often, guts hang in the belfry
While the heart aches beneath boards
And the suffering between them
Is just familiar enough to feel warm

Oh, then that fire starts in my head
I let that shit spread
Its...

At the beginning
There was light and dark
A cruelty and kindness
That spawned and accented everything through our occipital lobe.

That’s really the problem

For every saint I keep pressed to my inner cheek
There’s a devil drinking stomach acid
Just waiting for an opportunity

Running through fields of high violet
With you in my heart
And a fistful of wishes never to be wasted
On shooting stars

Paper planes shake in the evening wind
Barely floating there
Like planets in a panting galaxy
You are much more than this to me
Please know that

Regardless of how little faith
I view through these kaleidoscopic lenses
Please know that
You are much more than that to me

I’m a hotel balcony
And you’re the landscape
I’m the loaded gun
And you’ve always been the trigger finger
Prettier than any western aesthetic

My buoyant little daydreamer
I disintegrate into tiny bits of light
Every-time I see that tattoo on your thigh
Then I want teach you about
Thermodynamics, religion ...
