I have told countless strangers that I love them.
I once proposed to a girl in Portugal, after knowing her for aproximately 5 minutes,
Kinda destroys that "A drunk mind speaks a sober heart" saying, right!!!
Our path is never straight
Sometimes we may lose our way
Paths are created by walking
Heres to the crazy ones. The rebels, the misfits, the troublemakers, the round heads in the square holes, the ones who see things differently, they're not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, the only thing you cant do is ignore them. Because they change things, they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do!
If you want to find out who your true friends are, get sober!
Relationships change when you're in recovery, peoples attitudes toward you change. Some friends will be supportive, they want to see you happy, and for some, they start to trust you a little more i guess. Whilst some just fade away when you realise that all you had in common was alchohol or drugs. You also make new friends, often those who are in recovery themselves.
Embrace the people around you who stick around, you will need their support when you are feeling weak.
And most of all, realise that those friends who are still there, are there because they love you, despite your flaws, and not because of them!
Her: Do you remember when you used to drunk text me all the time?
Me: Yeah (laughing)
Her: I kind of miss that...
Me: I can always pretend
Her: Nah, it would just be weird now!
Dont spend your life looking for answers
For the best part
There are none
Spend your life looking for the right questions to ask
It is these
That will set you free!
We are all citizens of the world, my own ancestry based on DNA includes Scandinavian, French, Spanish and North African.
Human history is a history of migration. It was those with wealth and power who created borders and the idea of nationality in order to limit the movement of people, because they were an asset.
To hate or fear someone based on their nationality is a socio political construct that only serves those that profit from that fear.
Likewise with religion, different religions have grown in different parts of the world, the core concept being love for our fellow humans. To hate based on a persons religion serves only t...
Thought of the day...
Since being sober I have learnt many things.
I really dont need a drink to make bad decisions!
I spent so many years dwelling on the past.
Wondering how I could have done things differently.
Been a better husband, boyfriend, friend, person.
But I cant live there anymore.
I have to live in the now.
I just pop back from time to time, for reference.
Some people just make our lives better
Some people hear us even when we havent said a word
I live 200 metres from the Atlantic Ocean ( I know, lucky me) and when I look out of my window it speaks to me.
Today it is saying, stay away or I will kill you lol
Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.
From your humble beginnings in 1971, to the global organisation that you have now become, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do to highlight the damage being done to our planet in the name of GREED.
Defending our beautiful oceans, protecting our forests, and campaigning for peace. Your volunteers, often at great personal risk, work tirelessly to end the needless destruction of our natural world, and promote a peaceful and harmonious society at one with nature.
Your fight is our fight, yo...
10 things that make me smile.
1. Good friends, near and far.
2. A six foot swell with an offshore wind.
3. Living in a place where 40yr old people still skateboard to work.
4. Walking barefoot on the beach.
5. Making someone else smile or laugh.
6. Hugs, lots of hugs!
7. Storms... Okay its a strange one, but there is something beautiful about nature at its most destructive.
8. Dolphins, their soooo cute lol
9. Hearing a song, and being reminded of someplace or someone.
10. LIFE... "Mostly"
When an ex asks if we can still be friends...
I compare it to a kidnapper asking if we can keep in touch after they let me go
Sometimes we have to let go of what is killing us
Even when its killing us to let go
I work in a hotel in Newquay, this evening I got talking to a young couple who are on holiday. They delighted in telling me all about themselves, how successful they are, big house, expensive car, that sort of thing...
Then the guy said, you surfers, you just seem to drift, you dont take life seriously do you. I didnt say anything, I just laughed. I could have explained things to him but I dont think he would get it.
You see "us surfers" take life very seriously, all of my friends work, but we dont chase money, as long as we have enough to live on we are happy. We chose this life, it didnt choose us, we live each day for the joy of it, we seek out the experiences that make us feel alive.
No oxygen tanks
Just you, a pair of fins
And ONE BREATH
Once the ocean casts it spell
It keeps hold of you for ever
A free-dive may only last for a minute or two, but for that brief time you are completely in the moment. It doesnt matter what you did, or what you are going to do later, or even tommorrow, you are free and living in the NOW
A lesson we can carry every day of our lives, living life...
ONE BREATH AT A TIME!
Dont we all wish we could go back
To utter those words we left unsaid
Do do those deeds we left undone
Isnt it these things over which our bitterest tears are shed?
It was one year ago today that I became sober.
One year ago today that I realised that my life is my own.
I had nobody to blame but myself.
I hurt many people when I was drinking, people who cared, and they have recieved my humblest apologies....
But now my life has become a wonderful adventure, and I alone am responsible for the quality of it.
It is exactly one year ago today that I began to live.
If Chuck Palahniuk had written the Mr Men books
"The first rule of tickle fight club is....."
Not everyone will understand your journey
Its not their journey to understand
Never be ashamed of your story
It will inspire others
Imagine a dystopian society
Controlled by a wealthy elite
Where the poor have to pay for everything
....... Oh hang on
We all come from the sea
But we are not all of the sea
Those of us who are
We children of the tides
Must return to it again and again
Until the day we dont come back
Leaving only that which was touched along the way
Its our insanity and falls from grace that makes us stronger
Its our dark side that makes us whole
Its our insecurities and demons that connect us to the rest of humanity
Its our creativity that ultimately sets us free
There is nothing wrong with us!!!
National Write a Letter Day.
More than kisses, letters mingle souls.
Dont get me wrong, emails, texts and social media have their uses, I use them to communicate most days. However, snail mail is something much more personal, more intimate.
Its not a sense of nostalgia that draws me to letter writing, its the whole thought process and experience. The choice of paper, which pen I use, I tend to favour a fountain pen my father gave me as a child, even the ink I use is important to me.
And then there is the sense of joy that I feel when I myself recieve a real handwritten letter, I want others to experience that too. So letter writing may be a thing of the past for m...
Looking back at my life, I have met so many people who have inspired me, often without me realising it at the time.
Most of them have been oddballs, misfits, eccentrics, dreamers, free spirited and willing to live life to the full, even when society looks down on them for not conforming.
Most of all, those who inspire me choose to shine, even after all the storms they have been through...
My life is a jigsaw puzzle
The final piece
A life spent making mistakes, is not only more honourable, but more useful than one spent doing nothing.
George Bernard Shaw
When I am spent
When the day has been too hard
When the world is on my shoulders
When I feel fragile
About to break
When I just need to run away
I stand by your shore
Kick off my shoes
Let your waves kiss my feet
Stare at your vast expanse
And let you embrace my soul
I find myself once more.
In an earlier lettr I mentioned my favourite place on earth, Crantock Beach, just outside Newquay.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck at Crantock yesterday afternoon, three young holidaymakers, 27, 18 and 17., were swept out to sea by a rip current.
Surfers and paddleboarders rushed to their aid and managed to get them to shore, but unfortunately the 27 year old man died later in hospital.
My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.
The oceans, whilst beautiful, have no respect for us, we need to respect them.
