This has been a successful Integrity Week and we couldn’t have done it without your participation. The Society of Torch & Laurel is proud to know that there are so many scholars that are true representations of everything we hope to achieve.

We have finally come to the last day of Integrity Week. Our final theme is Personal Character Integrity. Your personal character is something that is unique to each person. All of your morals and values represent your character every day. That is why it is so important to keep that integrity no matter what challenge you face.

-How do you ensure that your personal character integrity doesn’t waiver during those challenges?
- Do you think your perso...

Hey Scholars!

There are only two days left in Integrity Week. Your letters have been so impressive. They have truly showcased why you all are Torch & Laurel Scholars.

The theme of the today is Professional Integrity. Professional integrity does not only apply to your actions in a workplace. Professional integrity applies to your school work and personal life as well. It is also necessary to consider how you would handle professional integrity in the future as it pertains to your career and success. What does professional integrity mean to you? What values will help you practice professional integrity for the future? Use the Integrity Week Stamp and tag your letters "TLIntegrity" and "I...

It’s Wednesday, scholars, and you know what that means. We are officially halfway through Integrity Week! You all have been amazing with your responses thus far. The Society of Torch & Laurel is proud of all of you! We cannot wait to continue to read what you have to share with us.

Today’s theme is Civic Integrity. Civic integrity is important to the well-being of society in general. It is necessary at various levels, including school government. Your civic integrity is reflected in the students you have elected to represent your school.

-What do you think of having a civic duty?
-Do you think civic processes are effective in student government? If not, how do you plan on changing...

Yesterday was Wellness Integrity Day at The Society of Torch & Laurel. Something that is not often discussed in terms of wellness integrity is addiction. Unfortunately, addiction affects a large population and yet it is not talked about as much as it should be. Here are some numbers for you to consider:

Last year, 44,000 people died of drug overdoses
52 percent of these people were related to prescription drugs
More than 2 million Americans are dependent on opioid painkillers every day

This conversation needs to begin now before those numbers increase beyond control. The conversation begins with you.  Today, we welcome you to think about the following questions and respond to them o...

Today we start the discussion around Academic Integrity, so here is a little thought-torpedo to think on: Richard Weissbourd, a senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, surveyed more than 10,000 middle and high school students and asked them to choose what mattered most: high individual achievement, happiness, or caring for others. What would you have said? If you’d say caring for others, you are in the minority; only 22% of students chose that option (NY Times). Weissbourd looked at his findings & wondered: how has the college admissions process contributed to our students’ quest for individual achievement and to a culture of “me, me, me”? When did we stop caring about th...

Building character and integrity is one of the most fundamental pillars of personal success and we at The Society of Torch & Laurel are committed to celebrating those that reflect what is at the heart of our program. Starting today, we invite scholars to speak on what integrity means to them.

Today’s theme is Academic Integrity! Here is a scenario for you to consider:

Scenario: Your teacher allows your class to take a take-home test. She tells you to do the test alone, without any outside sources including your book. After class your friend approaches you and asks to take the test with him. What would you do as a Torch & Laurel Scholar? What would you say to your friend? Tell us your t...

The best part of leaving high school would be knowing that you are an adult and finally ready to take responsibility for your life. Attending college would be another educational opportunity beyond high school. The worst part about leaving high school would be leaving all of your friends.

I will move out of my comfort zone in college by joining clubs to meet others. Another way I will leave my comfort zone is to spend as much time as possible outside of my room and to be more social in class and in different activities.

Dear Self,

So, switch from highschool to college:
Well for me, the hardest part of switching was being away from home. Taking care of yourself even if it is just the little things comes as a shock when it all adds up and you are on your own. Regarding the work load, I didn't find it that challenging as everyone says it is. But that is only because of the type of student I am. I do not like procrastinate and I get the job done once I know about it. If homework is due on Friday and I have extra time on a Tuesday to do it, I'm doing it then and getting it out of the way. Also time management is the key. I was never a kid that slid by in high school, I did the maximum amount of work possible ...

Dear Mr. Cerf,

First of all, thank you. As a father of the Internet, you have changed the world. You and your colleagues have given the world such an amazing tool: a never ending database in which anything is able to be accessed. I personally have been effected by your creation, and I know for a fact that others have been even more impacted than I.
The impact of the Internet on my life has been a growth in self confidence, and also a relief from boredom. You might ask "A growth in self confidence? How so?". Well, when I was younger, I was always the shy, nerdy kid in the room that never really said anything. But around fifth grade, my family got a computer. And being the sneaky c...

Dear Students of note,

My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs would be to have an unusual sense of persistence, persuasion, and passion to solve even the most basic problems in life.

And secondly, go all the way, with others who carry the same mission.  Say goodbye - quickly - to those that don't.

Hey Scholars,

Good things (and ideas) don’t just come in small packages, they come in all shapes and sizes! The modern entrepreneur can be in elementary school or in leisurely  retirement. Think back for a moment..were you the kid drawing up your business plans in crayon? Did you convince your neighborhood that you had revolutionized the homemade lemonade industry?

We know that these days, entrepreneurs start young and only get better with time. We want to hear from you scholars that have the entrepreneurial spirit and have experienced the highs and lows of starting/owning/running your own business.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring entrepreneur, what would it be...

Hello Scholars,

There are movers and shakers all around us. Maybe it is the local entrepreneur who brought business and revenue to the sleepy little town or the big-time CEO that volunteers at an animal shelter during his/her spare time. There are people who make a difference because that is their greatest calling.

Tell us about a person, group, organization or corporation that takes the time to give back and that you look up to.

Hey Scholars,

Are you a junior or senior who is ready to get a head start on college and postgraduate success? Then ScholarCon 2015 is the place you need to be! ScholarCon is an annual 4-day conference (more like extravaganza!) where some of the most innovative minds unite to inspire and engage the leaders of tomorrow. ScholarCon brings together our scholars from across the country for a jam-packed series of days with notable speakers, service events, workshops, boot camps and a couple of parties thrown in there. Last year, we had some big names that brought down the house (John Legend casually stopped by) and this year won’t be any different. It also doesn't hurt that it takes place in s...

Hey Scholars,

One of the greatest opportunities you will have in college is to take a few classes utterly just for fun. There might not be a rhyme or reason to taking “What To Do In A Zombie Apocalypse “ but maybe it is something that you find thrilling. In the midst of the rigors of Calculus 1200 or Biological Anthropology 101, it is nice to get an assignment that brings out your goofy side. There are so many times you need to be serious in school but every once in a while, take the time to just enjoy the silly things.

So, if you could create any college course and even instruct it yourself, what would it be?

Tag your responses #TLgoestocollege and #TLcollegetalk, we can’t wait to...

Going to college can almost feel like a dream. Wasn't it just yesterday you were drinking out of a sippy cup and taking your afternoon naps with your favorite stuffed monkey in a chokehold in your arms? Ahhh, those were the good days. But now, you can look forward to college where you can expand your experiences and your mind. It is said to be the “best” four years of your life…right? Yes, college can be the place where you create some of your best memories, but it is also important to go into it having realistic expectations.

Not every day will be ultimate Frisbee on the quad or pancakes for dinner. Let’s get serious here for a second. College will also be the time you come across some o...

Dear Scholars,

How appropriate is it that Earth Day is in the spring? It's the perfect time of year to celebrate and appreciate the natural world in all of its splendor. The privilege of experiencing such a majestic part of creation brings forth inherent responsibility. We must care for the world we live in through making simple, yet meaningful decisions in our everyday activities.

As you experience college your life will transform and grow, much like nature. You will have seasons that burst full with opportunity, creating paths that usher you into your destiny. You will also have seasons that leave you bleak and lifeless, anxiously waiting for the next season to begin.

One thing is...

Hey Scholars,

Going to college can be a little nerve-racking and a whole lot of exciting!! College is drastically different from high school from the courses (The History of Surfing anyone?) to the culture, to the food. You will be exposed to new people, lifestyles and ideas and no matter where you go or what you choose to study, this will be one of the most important periods in your life. Maybe this is your first taste of personal responsibility and ‘freedom’. Or maybe, this will be your chance to re-invent yourself and become the person you have always known you could be. So many possibilities and so little time (trust us, these four years will fly by)!!!

So tell us, what are you m...

Dear Scholars,

Asking for help is one of the hardest things to do. And while some mentors fall into your life serendipitously, others will require you to go and seek them out on your own. But where are these mentors? And how do you get them to be your mentor? You can network or reach out to others who have connections or have someone who you admire but have not approached yet.

How will/do you go about finding a mentor?
