Hi Scholars,

There is an element of reciprocity in mentorship. As you teach, you also learn. Whether you've found  new way to solve a problem or learned to think about something differently in the process, you get as much out of mentoring as you put into it.

Can you give an example from personal experience when you learned something new in the process of teaching?

Tag your letter "TLMentorship" "#TorchandLaurel" and/or "Mentorship", add the Torch & Laurel Stamp and blast it on social media using hash tags #TLmentorship and #mentorship.

Hey Scholars,

Last week, you wrote about the different roles that mentors play in your lives. But one thing that remains the same, no matter the type of mentor you have, is that they have imparted wisdom that has stayed with you. Why don’t you share it with us?

Is there one piece of advice that a mentor has given you that stands out above the rest?

Use the tags “TLmentorship” “TorchandLaurel” and “Mentorship”, the Torch & Laurel Stamp, and #TLmentorship and #mentorship on social media!

Dear Torch and Laurel,

I am a mentor of the world, by helping people discover the letter writer within them through lettrs.

I also try to mentor my children who bring me great joy and laughter.

I began my affinity for mentoring as an Army officer 20 years ago, serving with young men in Italy and then Iraq.

Mentoring teaches us more than we ever sought to teach others.

Sincerely,

lettrs CEO, Drew Bartkiewicz

Mentors can come in different shapes and sizes. They can also play different roles in your life. Are they your supervisor at your first job, your coach on the soccer team, your high school guidance counselor, your history teacher, or that person who knows someone in your dream career field?

Tell us about the role a mentor has played in any aspect of your life, be it personal, professional, or academic.

Make sure to tag your letters #TLMentorship #TorchandLaurel and #Mentorship!

Hey Scholars,

Keep them coming! Last time, we asked our beloved mentors to write in and we could not have been more proud. There are some truly amazing people out there and we are lucky to have read your letters. There have been so many thoughtful responses!

Today, we want to talk about hindsight. It is 20/20 right? You might have not had a mentor at a point in your life when we needed it the most, so how about being your own mentor?

If you could go back in time and act as a mentor to ‘yourself’, what would you say/teach?

Reflection is a great learning tool and we want to hear what you have to say! Get active on social media with hashtags #TLmentorship and #mentorship after yo...

Dear Scholars,

Mentorship is not always about having friends in high places. There are natural ways this relationship can form, implicitly and among peers. You can have that one friend who always has wise words to dole out or one that has an optimistic attitude towards life. There are things you can learn from the most unexpected of sources and it is always a pleasant surprise!

Have you had a friend you looked up to and who has influenced you?

Write us a #lettr and tell us all about it! Tag it “TLmentorship” “TorchandLaurel” and/or “Mentorship” and stamp it and post it on social media.

So far, we have talked about what makes a great mentor and have thought about someone that fits the bill. Now, we want to hear from the mentors!

We want to give you the chance to write to the mentor of your dreams. If you could write to that person, what would you say?

Dear Torch and Laurel,

Thank You for inspiring us with such a thought provoking theme. I think writing on the topic of integrity, gave many of us a chance to reflect on that which we most value. It was wonderful to read so many diverse perspectives on this topic and I look forward to making further contributions in the near future.

Dear Torch and Laurel,

What does relationship integrity mean? I believe it's being faithful to your partner, honesty is the key thing and not settling for less for what you know you deserve in your relationships. What I mean by being faithful to your partner, I mean behaving in ways that are harmony with your personal values and making choices based on what you believe, not others opinions. Sometimes this can be very hard to choose the right from wrong because of peer pressure. Maybe all your friends are having sex and your relationship isn't that intimate yet. That could cause you to go find somebody to have sex with and cheating on your partner. Peer pressure can cause a lot of problems ...

Integrity.

To us here at Sundara, integrity not only means acting honestly and fairly but also making the choice to be aware of others in every action you take.

We are inspired by this quote from Bob Marley:

"The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.
Bob Marley

Thanks for bringing this discussion to the table. We hope to see more people focused on living their lives with integrity.

Dear Torch and Laurel,

Integrity. It is a quality much prized by our culture, but rarely do people practice it. This has to do with what "having integrity" actually means for every one us with regards to our relationship with others. Having integrity requires us to have humility and to practice courage.
Every lie a man tells begins with him lying to himself. Dishonest actions are aimed to save the skin of or better the one who does it; thus, to be dishonest requires people to convince themselves that their interests are most important. After all, they think, they're only being practical. But if every man serves only his own will, making himself his own god, people are bound to conflict ...

Dear Society of Torch & Laurel,

Brian Tracy once said: "The glue that holds all relationships together . . . is trust, and trust is based on integrity."  And what better day to discuss relationship integrity than the day before Valentine's Day?

All relationships -- whether they are between friends, family, or romantic partners -- require trust and integrity to flourish.  In any good relationship, both parties are honest, loyal, and caring to each other.  This is the secret to any great love, friendship, or family bond.

Relationship Integrity

Oh how I wish I had a special someone to hold me tight.
Someone to tell me I'm beautiful each and every night.
The one person I want to keep safe.
A place in your arms, a home so I won't be a waif.
I may be young, but love I know.
Not just from movies, and shows.
I learned to love from those who love me.
They taught me that hearts come with a key.
For the ones you love, family, and friends, you give a copy.
For your lover, you give the original, along with you soul, and body.
If only I had someone to call my own.
Instead, I feel like the class clown, in the corner, with a cone.
Couples laugh and tease.
For they have their ones, and have exchanged keys.
Please come soon...

RELATIONSHIP INTEGRITY

Integrity is a value that cannot be shifted or traded, it is earned.

For a relationship to work it must be built on respect and admiration for how the other person carries him or herself. Integrity is what builds that admiration.

We all seek to be better people and the biggest crutch most of us face is hoping that someone else will solve our issues. The only person is you, and how you handle your problems builds integrity that is evident in any relationship.

Take each day and do a little more to better yourself.

Sincerely,
-the head lettrist

Dear Society of Torch & Laurel,

Douglas Adams once said: "To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity."  This statement applies to professional integrity.

Professional settings, be they workplaces or schools, always have a code of conduct that is expected to be followed by those working in that setting.  One of the most important parts of such a code of conduct is honesty with both superiors and peers, with honesty as the key component of integrity.  People who maintain their professional integrity are the most successful and respected.

RELATIONSHIP INTEGRITY

As a child, I believed that the world was trans dimensional. That no matter how simple life seemed, there was always a layer of complexity beyond the reach of my fingers.

It seemed that if I could find the right altitude, I could explore the furthest reaches of my consciousness. It was this sort of philosophical proliferation that caused me to feel disconnected from my peers.
I was never content to be bound to the earth.

In fact in science class, when I was first introduced to the concept of Gravity, I wanted to obliterate it's hold over my life.
In my mind, It was my enemy.
Another obstacle set before me, to keep me from reaching my destination.

No matter how ram...

PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY

Ah, loving #integrity week! Up next: integrity in the workplace...

The same respect and honesty you give your friends and family, you ought to give your coworkers. (Really, anyone you come across in every facet of your life deserves this, am I right!?)

Where this gets tricky is walking the fine line between sharing too much in the workplace. I like to keep my work relationships professional without over-sharing too many details, especially when it comes to my personal life. BUT, that doesn't mean I forgo being honest to my coworkers. Taking pride in your job and the people who sit next to you, day in and day out, will not only add more value to your life, it will ru...

Dear Society of Torch & Laurel,

C.S. Lewis once said: "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching."  This statement exemplifies the meaning of civic integrity, a trait possessed by individuals such as Glen James.

Glen James was a homeless man in Boston.  One cool September day, he noticed an abandoned backpack sitting on the ground outside the store.  When he looked inside the backpack, he saw that it was filled with over $40,000!

Now here was a golden opportunity!  Such a huge sum of money could change his life.  But the thought of keeping the money never crossed his mind.  Instead, he immediately turned the backpack in to the police, who promptly found its owner an...

Dear Torch & Laurel,

What does academic integrity mean? I keep asking myself over and over, each time digging deeper into my mind. Many people find themselves asking the same question, whether it's for a contest, a class in school, or to just expand their horizon on how to become a better student. Academic integrity means to be honest and responsible in a scholarship or academic setting. Academic assignments are there to help students learn, understand, and comprehend content to achieve personal goals. Grades exist to show how much information was obtained and how well that person met his or her goal. This helps all students understand that all grades should result from the student's own u...

In my eyes, personal integrity is being honest and having strong moral principles and not just liberty. So in other words, instead of doing something because you can do it and it's a free country, you act on what you believe is right. Having integrity is part of having a great sense of right and wrong. Integrity is the little voice in the back of your mind speaking to you at those little moments that seem like they won't matter in the future. The whisper of integrity urges you to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Granted, it is way easier to choose the wrong because it seem right at the time or all your other friends are taking part in the activity. For example, some of you...

Dear Society of Torch & Laurel,

It was either Bernard M. Baruch or
Dr. Seuss that once said: "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."  Whoever it was that said it, the message is the same: personal integrity is an essential part of one's being that cannot be compromised.

We live in a world where people tend to forsake their own interests in favor of more popular options in order to "fit in" with the rest of society.  The misconception is that fitting in will be more beneficial than being different, whether these perceived benefits are more happiness or greater financial gain.

However, it is easy to see that the people wh...

Dear Society of Torch & Laurel,

Dictionary.com defines integrity as "adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty."  This rings especially true in the academic world.

From high school students to medical researchers, everyone must give credit where credit is due when information from another source is used in an academic paper or publication.  It takes true integrity to be honest about the sources of information used in such works.

I had to reflect quite a bit on personal integrity, but I finally came to this conclusion.  I am not sure whether or not this is the class of integrity which was implied, but:

I would define personal integrity as recognizing and claiming responsibility for ones own mistakes rather than ignoring the error or deflecting the blame onto a person or excuse.  It's something that I think everyone struggles with in their life because it's hard to swallow our pride and admit fault.  However, it's crucial to do so because learning from them is the only way that one can grow and move past those mistakes.
