Last night, I placed my empty
Whiskey glass on the counter.
This morning,
I awoke and found that
It was still full of regret.

Yeah...
I got drunk on her once
And
I’ve been hung over
Chasing that high
Ever since

She was a
Once in a lifetime
Kinda woman.
What a damn shame
He treated her
Like an everyday
Kinda choice.

Sitting here I can’t help but think
That the talents of my lips
Are being wasted.
I could be drinking you up
Leaving my lips smelling
Of lust and satisfaction.
Yet here they are
tasting of yearning and whiskey.
But as far as wasted talents go
Drinking whiskey ain’t half bad.

The absolute agony of technology
Is having you at my fingertips
Yet
Miles away from
My arms

I could walk in from work
And see you peacefully sleeping.
I could slip into bed
And gently pull you into me
Feel you sink into my chest.
Perhaps you’d murmur
An inaudible greeting
Maybe I’d kiss your neck
And I’d drift off to sleep
As you arose untangling yourself
From my hold.
That would be ideal....
If only you were here
Instead of in my mind.

I never understood
Why she was fascinated
With the moon.
Until one night
When I saw it shining
Wearing the clouds
Like a little black dress.
Wielding its power
With grace and holding
Anything looking up captive
With its quiet beauty.
Then I understood the affinity.
She did the exact same thing
Walking into a room
Without even realizing it.
She brazenly glowed.
Not to compete with the light
But just so she could find her way
Through the dark.

It would have been 16 years today.
I couldn’t help but feel
A pang of wistfulness
When I realized it.
I started down that
Tired, worn out path of
Self doubt.
I started questioning
If I tried hard enough
Mend the frayed ties that bind.
But then I remembered
What my mom told me when I was young.
If you keep picking at that scab
It will never heal.
I guess the same goes for scars.

You don’t want me
But you don’t
Want me to want anyone else.
Believe it or not
I have better things to do
Than play second fiddle
To your fickle heart.

No matter how much I
Try to pretend otherwise
This pillow doesn't
Sigh and sink into my arms
The way you did
Once upon a time.

Just lay with me
Let my fingers
Write words on your skin
As you tousle my hair.
Just listen to me breath
And I'll listen to you sigh.

So here's a toast to
Those of us writing
Virtual letters
That will never be sent
And that are seen by
Everyone except
The intended recipient.

Well babe,
You will  always be that dream
That was realized
Once upon a time
But never quite came true.
