Absurdism and the Futility of Life

There is no categorical meaning to be found in life. The bleak pointless of all existence is omnipresent and persistent in modern life. The enlightenment provided mankind with the ultimate freedom, that which both liberated and enslaves us. We are liberated from any notion of imperative truths of life, allowing us to be free thinking individuals without any restrictions beyond those we choose to place upon ourselves. We are enslaved however, by the ultimate reality of nothingness. It is all encompassing and we cannot escape from it. Human societies function because we are made to believe that life can have meaning, whether through religion, philosophy or ...

Freedom is an entirely personal experience. One's attitude to one's own human "condition" is one that is defined exclusively by perception and understanding. It is well documented in journals detailing the complexities of human understanding that our individual perceptions differ wildly from those of our peers. The reasons for this are social, economic, psychological and cultural, but the role of freedom is inherently necessary to understanding the world and one's place within it.

Psychologically, freedom is either a liberation or (rather ironically) an isolation in the minds of an average person. Whether one sees the world as their oyster to be moulded to their world view or as a monolithic...

Memoirs of My Tired Eyes

Tired eyes burned with a subtle glow in the dying light of dusk. The cracks and crevices of an experienced face carried a somber weight of time passed. A faint flicker across the sky sparkled across her weathered pupils.

A faint musty smell lingered in the air, its cold fingers stroked the mould that had formed on the glass patio door. Sinking further into her armchair she smiled at the bright stars shimmering on the twisting river.

In the distance, an alarm ringing out brought her mind back to the darkest of times. Rations, death and the bitter taste of suffering clung to her tongue like the reminiscence of a sickly meal. Yet, her heart still beat. She too reme...

We didn't get along because the time just wasn't right. Reflection for a time seemed the only option, but seeing you again has flipped everything on its head.

If yesterday had been today, then perhaps it would've worked. But tomorrow has become today and this chance I will not scupper.
We nearly lost ourselves on the way, but as I look back, I see that it is you I have become.

Lettrists,

Welcome to the universe of opportunity. An endless, impossibly complex realm of no clear purpose. Whether this universe is the product of some great design experiment or a mere coincidence as the result of billions of years of development, it holds the same meaning for all.

Free will in theology and existentialist freedom in realism gives us all a chance to seize the freedom of reality and define an individual path for ourselves. There are constricts within human society that to some are restrictive, but ultimately the way you choose to live boils down to the choices you make, the people you befriend and the attitude you enter every day with.

In short, recognise your freedom, g...

A life of preparation had led to this moment. The pointless dinners, the endless fundraisers, the monotony of faking a smile to every rich old bitch on death's door who "believed in the future of democracy".

He had decided from an early age that this was his goal, he had set his sights upon a perfect ambition and he had clawed himself from the mould and the dirt to the distant peaks of impossible success. They told him from the start he wouldn't make it and now he proved them wrong. His burning ambition had melted the hard ice of tradition and elitism.

Now was his time. The lies, the deceit and the death had been but small steps on his route to this moment. And so he stood.

As I stood upon the green field,
I felt the power then,
As I gazed upon a love affair,
I had thought would never end.

But she left me on the green field,
Just the moonlight on my face,
'The one that got away' I thought,
But the power's in this place.

It began with my election,
To the office I had craved,
I hadn't time for reflection,
I was busy making waves.

It seemed to pass so quickly,
As my final speech concluded,
This time I saw it coming,
The bullet of my downfall.

Living in the darkness,
A metaphorical hell,
But one I had predicted,
Would be my place to dwell.

Sitting in the darkness,
I long to see the green field,
To hear the cheers of voters,
But here within the darkness
There...

It is as though society has fallen ill. As a year we all recognise as dark comes to a somber end, we can only reflect upon the mistakes of the past to emphasise the importance of avoiding the same mistakes being made in the future.

The state of the world has had a numbing effect on the mood of its populous. An endless stream of sorrow has brought mankind to its figurative knees. It is important to note however, that we have not yet fallen. As people we are ensnared in the black dog of depression, but we are not yet past the point of no return.

It may seem that the world is collapsing inwards, but we remain capable, united and strong willed beneath it all. There are those among us still wil...

Charles sat in the hospital bed, a comfortable prison. The crisp sheets a testimony to a life of comfortable satisfaction. His habit brought him here.

He lay, breathing through the rasping tube attached to his false lung. The ultimate irony befell him. Stress and anxiety, the very demons he sought to avoid when he started smoking now ruled his psyche at its hand.

Nurses came a left, their voices a disapproving whip of false friendliness.

His family had no sympathy, merely a passive aggressive attempt at interventionism.

The hardest part of lying here, immobilised and enduring the last few days of his life was the unstoppable craving. The little beast inside him clawed at his brain like ...

I am not one to dwell,
To fixate is a need from which I am exempt.
I need not focus on it,
It is the past now and I have endured before.

I am not one to dwell,
With a past like mine I find it does not sit well.
I see no reason to think,
When I have so much more now.

I am not one to dwell,
Jealousy is an affliction with which I do not quarrel.
Did you think it would hurt?
Believe me, I have done so much worse.

I am not one to dwell,
There are other demons that I must quell.
That was but a blip,
But I am back to how I was and I am doing so well.

I only look forward now,
And my future is bright.
Lined by another,
With whom I do not fight.
But then there's another and that's a fun tale,
But...

The adventure of life is a privilege afforded to all of us. The greatest and most significant point in anyone's life is the moment at which you disregard your inhibitions and what is expected of you and take the leap into the dark.

For me, stepping into this realm of depth, mindfulness and freedom came at the point I could confidently say, I don't want to know, I just want to go.

I think that perhaps sometimes, the bliss of ignorance on a local level gives one's mind the broadened horizon from which to set off in a journey that brings knowledge you could never have acquired through the conventional and limited means of thought...

Manifest Destiny. The words rang in his ears, like a beckoning summon to a predestined arrangement of unavoidable truth. Preparation, suffering and endurance had gone into every individual step along the turbulent path to this precipice of a place.

His office, ornate and lavish in its amenities was designed to perfectly suit his taste and conviction. The tired smell of faded cigars clung to the furniture. Pungent and apparent to the briefest of visitors, the smell had carried him through many battles, personal and physical.

Now, his walnut desk and its distinctive whiskey stains became an iron clad trap of swirling desire and motivation. The final push would come within the next few days ...

When we stood upon the green field
In a place I once thought lonely
I felt as though I belonged there
Your hand in mine

When we stood upon the green field
I marvelled at the stars
But none did shine as brightly
As that inside my heart

You told me that you loved me
When we left that place
But I knew the thought was growing
As I held you by in the moonlight

When we stood upon the green field
I gave you something perfect
And yet you shone much brighter
With that our love was born

Your hands were cold that evening
As I had thought my heart was
And yet I felt the thawing
That lasted long after

To go back upon the green field
Never feels quite the same
Without you beside me

To create a a legacy is to leave a mark.
Some consider the greatest legacy of all to be one's children. Though this is true, I sometimes worry my child/ren may never reflect the values, intellect and attitude I hold to life. They are a part of my legacy yes; but their paths are separate and distinct from my own, perhaps in excess or deficit, but nevertheless, not directly mine.

I have no ambition of glory beyond the modest capability life has bestowed upon me. Words and the knowledge they impart are likely to be the only legacy I truly leave, whether that be in academic format or simply the insight I have attempted to give here. I wish only to be remembered.

As Jean Paul Sartre said "man ...

It will have been a year soon.

How time flies when one doesn't pay attention, when one fails to consider temporal placements relative to one's past. Regardless, I find myself reflecting on a very different time, an interesting and somewhat more playful time. It is fair to say I was happy and perhaps simultaneously more and less sensible.

Nonetheless reflection is an imperative of enlightenment and as I find myself drawn towards communication I need only remember how far I have come. Things have changed now, on both ends of a vast spectrum. I see only happiness on the far side and that, if nothing else, makes one of us.

As I would hope you have become increasingly aware, such things cannot...

To a place far from here.
No matter, I shall wait for you dear.

Absconded have you?
Where others do tempt.
No matter, my trust in you is not bent.

Absconded have you?
To lands shores away.
No matter, I can wait for today.

Absconded have you?
The doubt may creep in.
No matter, neither is drawn toward sin.

Absconded have you?
Alas, I miss you.
No matter, for this you must do.

Absconded have you?

Or I'll write more words like these.

Absconded have you?
No matter what you do.
I will always love you.

Wisdom

Not a word we use lightly. A word that tends to be more associated with age, than intelligence. Wisdom, is often seen as the brainpower one acquires after enduring and experiencing life's hardships.

This however, is not wisdom. Wisdom is a collaborative stance one assumes naturally, through a deeper understanding and indeed, some hardship. Wisdom is the ability of another to realise the fallacy of conversion in communication. Changing the views of another is almost impossible, the wise recognise that the best approach to conversation is one of peacefulness and holding one's tongue in the face of potential animosity.

The wise are able to laugh at themselves. They recognise their ow...

It can be difficult to accept reality at times. Often we choose realms of wonder and fantasy beyond the comprehensive boundaries of normality.

There are many psychological and philosophical reasons for this discrepancy in our personal consciousness. It is staggering to think of the number of fantastical realities that must exist in the metaphysical realm of a collective subconscious.

The only reality is one of acceptance. Acceptance that the boundaries we are confined by are not absolute, but are subjectively influenced by decisions, attitudes and morals we adopt in our unique brand of escapism.

Being confined is an ultimate freedom, it is a freedom to redefine the known and discover the ...

There's is nothing more frustrating than a limited mind.

Nothing is indefinite, our beliefs, faiths and long held views about the way the universe is or ought to he can often perpetuate a growing sense of contempt for the extraordinary or unusual a in our minds. As plato's allegory of the cave attempts to explain, many people are closed off from a wider world of deeper, critical and more logical thought. Trapped in a cycle of fallacy, false hope and unthinking obedience.

It is only when one can accept the flaws in one's own thoughts, feelings and opinions that one truly opens up to this wider world to which we remain ignorant. Answers, solutions and wonder lie over the walls... Denial of t...

Do not mourn me,
Celebrate me.
Do not bury me,
Send my ash to the sky.
I wish to see happiness
As was that I tried to gain.
I wish to see homeliness
Like that I lost today.

Do not mourn me,
I wish not to dwell.
I did what I wanted
And I thought it was swell.
I saw many things,
I walked many paths,
I felt love
I felt hate
And I saw
Many faces.

Do not mourn me,
As a wise man once said
To live life is to see beauty.
And I've lived my fair share.
As long as you're with me,
I'm already there.
If life is beauty
And beauty is life
I have everything, here in your eyes.

Eyes

Blue, grey, green?
Those story tellers...
Open pages only the blind could miss,
Blue, grey, green?

Blue, grey or green?
By the light they change,
Those story tellers...
Oh and under strain.
These tales of the present,
Blue, grey or green?

Blue, grey or green?
Those open seas,
Where my soul is lost,
Those story tellers...
They've written me,
Into a thousand deeds,
Together we'll make history.
Blue, grey or green?

Blue, grey or green?
This final scene,
Depicts a tale of you and me,
A grand novel of lovers now,
Those story tellers...
The book I read,
Beyond the colour,
The one I need,
Looks back at me.
Blue, grey, or green?

Do you want to be successful?

Throughout our lives, particularly those of us blessed with youth we are repeatedly urged to drive for success. I have previously written about the misconceptions we hold societally about success and so I shan't delve into too much detail about how I personally define success in life.

However it stands to reason that if our assumptions as a community with regard to success are fundamentally wrong then surely our standardised methods of reaching such goals are also in some way flawed? We are frequently given ideals for achievement and motivational quips for the pursuit of success, but I think it is time we had a new perspective.

Success is not limited to hard...

Sometimes it is easy to forget our humanity. And I mean that not in my usual ostentatious sense of grandiose proclamation. No, on this occasion, I refer to our humanity as a simple and very basic quality of our existence.

It is easy to over-estimate our own limits in modern life. One grows accustomed to a certain freedom, accessibility and lifestyle that is often unhealthy. Those of us who consider ourselves armchair intellectuals, psychologists and philosophers can often become self absorbed and as result, ignorant to the basic functions of our bodies. I, myself am guilty of this.

To a great extent my overconfidence and indulgence has become a threat to my health and wellbeing and I have ...

When the darkness comes
In our broken dream
Feeds the ghost of woes

Your silence ends
As my life begins
A rematch you ask?

I foresee the road ahead
Our broken dream
In our former bed

The land of cold
Of fear and death
You walk alone

But I have sunlight here

In conversation, we are not simply communicating an exchange of mere words. Our language and the way we exercise it is not by any stretch of one's imagination a dismissible proclamation of ones intent or reasoning.

No. Language is much more than this, it is not a suggestion of intent, reason or purpose, but rather a dedication with passionate self-ownership to a system of inner and communally recognised reference. We take for granted the small talk and passing comments those around us make, but what we fail to realise is the complexity of each sentence we utter. Our words do not just carry a plain communicative meaning, but instead give the perceptive listener total insight to our selves. We...

Dearest writers,

I had these thoughts on a train this morning and felt I would share it with you all, and I shall say once again that I have every intention of returning to my former height of activity.

There is a flaw in popular perception. Indeed we all buy into the perpetuated idea that we're all social philosophers in the modern day, although this isn't a bad thing it allows for the collective misunderstanding of a piece of life to be consistently misconstrued between the entirety of the society we're so desperate to fix.

For many one of the most pressing issues for modern societies (particularly those in the industrialised West) is the prioritisation of money and economics over the ...

The wounds are fresh,
The battle won,
A night of terror,
This darkest one.

Around the world,

To the demons far,
This darkest hour.

But the sun can rise.

The day we met was overlooked
Even in my mind.
Distracted by another I was
Another of your kind.

It started not long after
The story we may tell.
A passage of hidden messages
Like a bucket in a well.
The secrets of our times,
Concealed within these rhymes.

Our future, love is hazy
Because I held my tongue.
You were worried like the others
That I'd just lead you along.

My intentions, love were honest
Like the care I tried to show.
But my method perhaps too forward
For how were you to know?
I hid my secret well from you
And the rest of my world too.

Like big to small
Like brash to shy,
We're for each other
Yes, you and I.

Belief in one's self is made out to be a more vital aspect than is true in reality... A positive mindset is helpful to no end yes, but one doesn't simply acquire such a frame of thinking through the willpower to do so. Indeed, this acquisition comes through self-endurance, the application of the mind and the body to perform effectively in situations that previously seemed daunting. You will find that as you defeat odds and obliterate boundaries, your confidence will grow alongside your strength.
